Instagram just released Hyperlapse, their new (iOS only) app that allows you to create hyperlapse videos directly on your iPhone or iPad. Don’t know what a hyperlapse is? Check out this video for a quick introduction to Hyperlapse:
In short, a hyperlapse is a time-lapse video, but the magic of Instagram’s new Hyperlapse app is that instead of needing expensive cameras and heavy post-production work, you can now make your own hyperlapse with a free app. Using your iPhone’s gyroscope, Hyperlapse takes your video, smooths it out and lets you play it back any speed between 2x and 16x. The app then saves your hyperlapse to your iOS Camera Roll for use in any video you’re editing. The app also allows for easy sharing to Instagram or Facebook.
How to use Hyperlapse for Tourism Videos
Just about every clip in the Hyperlapse promo video below could be used in a tourism video.
Hyperlapse is a great tool for creating interesting videos to post to social media, but a good hyperlapse could be fantastic b-roll for your destination. Imagine a hyperlapse of driving through the Rocky Moutains, driving the highway as your city skyline becomes visible, a bike ride through Central Park, a ride on the best roller coaster at your local amusement park, a sunset or sunrise on the beach or even a walk around your state fair.
National Geographic just posted this great video using Hyperlapse that shows a drive through Yellowstone National Park – complete with buffalo crossing the road:
At the end of the day, Hyperlapse can give you one more option to create interesting b-roll to use in your videos. Now, in addition to taking static photos of some of the great views in your area, think about how you could create a compelling hyperlapse videos.
